Satellite Broadband Industry
The broadband industry as a whole has exploded in the last 2 years, with fast internet access having an increasingly vital role to play in all our lives.
The larger companies like BT and Tiscali have raced to capitalise on this sudden growth, spending millions advertising a service that all too often has proved unreliable and over-contended. The medium-sized ISPs, with technical expertise and a growing customer base (usually from word of mouth) are where the discerning customer places his trust. Oftel became involved when it became clear that BT were attempting to hamper the growth of broadband by placing unfair restrictions on competitors forced to use their network and Oftel stepped in to ensure growth resumed in a fair and equitable manner.
Part of this was to ensure unhappy customers could leave a provider without fuss and so a migration process was born, with broadband customers now able to move from one provider to another relatively easily.
But even with the fantastic growth of standard broadband, there continued to be a demand from a forgotten minority. Those who were out of range of their exchange, or whose exchange was not due to be enabled began to demand fast internet access but without the giant costs associated with leased lines.
At this point satellite broadband came into its own, with manageable installation fees and reasonable monthly costs. Businesses all over the country are beginning to pick up on satellite broadband and long may it continue.
The future is clear, as more and more exchanges get enabled and the stated view from the Government that every exchange in the country will be ready by 2006.
The internet is here to stay and the working practice of businesses are already changing to accommodate it. For those who cannot get conventional adsl, satellite broadband is the best move.
